Mark 4:41
“The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they
asked each other. “Even the wind and waves
obey Him!”
Who is this Man? I think
we’ve lost the sense of the wonderful when we think of God. Wonderful:
full of wonder! Too often we
think of God as an appendage to our lives, some kind of heavenly ATM to which
we can go when we need something, instead of the center of the universe, the
One Being to whom all glory and honor belongs.
Who is this Man? Who is He to
me? Who should He be to me? The disciples were “terrified” when Jesus
calmed the storm-probably more terrified than they were in the storm! Yet, when we read this passage, we holler,
“Yay! GO JESUS!” It’s because we don’t see Who Jesus really
Is, just what He can do.
If Jesus were to be physically in front of me, calming my storm, I
daresay I might be terrified instead of exultant! And I should be. He’s God and I’m very definitely not! Comparing me to Him is like comparing the
power of a mite to that of a lion-and 10,000 x 10,000 more than that!
So, the question the disciples asked, the question of the ages, “Who
is this man?” is the one we should be continually asking ourselves. In every circumstance, large or small, let’s
train ourselves to see God and ask, “Who is this Man?”
As I drive to work each morning, seeing hundreds of other people
with hundreds of unique faces; as I see an opening tulip; as I experience the
joyful difficulty of caring for my mother, or spending time with a small
granddaughter; as I watch my dog persistently dig until she finally unearths
that gopher; as I fall asleep at night holding my husband’s hand . . . I will
ask myself “Who is this Man?”
And when I
finally see Him with my eyes, I will receive a complete, holy answer directly
from my God.
Father, may I
never stop discovering Who You Are!
Amen.
